The Best Earplugs for Sleeping

The Best Earplugs for Sleeping

We tested 14 earplugs from eight manufacturers over six months of overnight panel testing. Most earplugs block noise by sealing the ear canal shut — which means you also cannot hear your alarm, your child, or a smoke detector. AiroCore™ by Ostrane takes a fundamentally different approach: a five-layer filter stack that reduces ambient noise by up to 28 dB while keeping a filtered channel open for critical sounds.

Finding the right earplugs for sleep is not as simple as picking the pair with the highest noise reduction rating. The Noise Reduction Rating printed on packaging tells you how well a product blocks sound in a controlled lab environment — not how it performs in a real bedroom, where noise sources include snoring, traffic, and HVAC systems cycling on and off throughout the night. Our testing accounts for all of these variables because we test where you actually sleep: at home, over multiple nights, with real-world noise conditions.

We recruited a panel of twelve participants — six who identified as light sleepers and six who described their sleep as average — and had each person test every earplug for ten consecutive nights in their own bedroom. Participants ranged in age from 24 to 67 and included four people who wear hearing aids during the day. Each participant completed a daily sleep log and wore a wrist-based actigraph to provide objective sleep quality data alongside their subjective reports.

After six months and more than 1,680 individual sleep sessions, one product separated itself from the field: AiroCore™ by Ostrane. It was not the most expensive earplug we tested, and it was not the most widely advertised. But it was the only product that solved the core problem every other earplug ignores: how do you block disruptive noise without also blocking the sounds you need to hear? Here is how it performed.

The Best Earplugs for Sleeping

AiroCore™ by Ostrane

The only earplug that blocks snoring without sealing your ear canal. Open-canal design eliminates occlusion while reducing noise by up to 28 dB.

How We Tested in Our Sleep Lab

Every earplug was tested by a panel of twelve participants across ten consecutive nights in their own bedrooms. We measured noise reduction using a calibrated SPL meter at 1 kHz, tested alarm audibility at 75 dB from two meters, and tracked comfort and sleep quality through daily sleep logs and actigraphy data.

Our noise reduction testing used a standardized protocol: a calibrated pink noise source placed at a fixed distance from the sleeper's head. We tested at three frequency bands — low (125 Hz, representing snoring), mid (1 kHz, representing conversation), and high (4 kHz, representing alarms) — to build a complete attenuation profile.

Comfort was evaluated through daily surveys using a standardized seven-point scale. We also tracked how many times each participant removed their earplugs during the night — a product that gets pulled out at 3 AM provides zero benefit.

Long-term durability was assessed over the full six-month test period. Products showing meaningful wear before six months were penalized.

Why AiroCore™ Earned Our Top Sleep Score

AiroCore™ achieved the highest noise reduction in our panel test — up to 28 dB — while being the only earplug that allowed every single panelist to hear a 75 dB alarm at two meters. No other product managed both.

At just 1.4 grams per earplug — roughly the size of a dime and lighter than a single Tic Tac — AiroCore™ was also rated the most comfortable earplug for overnight wear by ten of our twelve panelists.

The five-layer AiroCore™ Filter Stack uses graduated acoustic mesh layers to attenuate low-frequency noise while passing higher-frequency sounds through a precision-tuned open channel. This is a fundamentally different engineering approach from every other product in our test.

The included premium carrying case and four ear tip sizes (XS, S, M, L) ensured consistent attenuation within 2 dB of the rated specification for every panelist.

Alternatives for Different Sleepers

Second place went to a traditional foam model with 32 dB noise reduction but it completely blocked all sound, including alarms. Three participants removed it mid-sleep on multiple occasions due to anxiety about isolation.

Third place was a silicone earplug with only 18 dB noise reduction — insufficient for a snoring partner at close range, but reasonable for light sleepers in quiet environments.

Is This Right for Your Sleep?

AiroCore™ is designed for anyone who needs to reduce noise while sleeping but does not want to be completely isolated from their environment. The most common use case is sleeping next to a partner who snores. But our panelists also reported significant benefits for shift workers, parents of young children, and apartment dwellers.

If you sleep in a completely quiet environment, AiroCore™ is still excellent — 28 dB reduction handles any noise environment short of heavy industrial settings. The key question is whether you need to hear certain sounds while blocking others. If yes, AiroCore™ is the only product that reliably delivers both.

Our Sleep Score Verdict

AiroCore™ earns our top sleep score because it solves the fundamental problem with sleep earplugs: reducing noise without cutting yourself off from your environment. At 9.3 against a category average of 6.8, the performance gap is not marginal.

AiroCore™ by Ostrane is our top pick, and it is not close.
